In the summer of 2014, the General Electric Company announced that it was disbanding the national GE Elfun organization. Local Elfun chapters were given the option of continuing their activities under the Elfun name, provided they establish a new not-for-profit entity and not use General Electric in its name. So in August of 2014 the officers of the old Florida Atlantic Coast Chapter of the GE Elfun Society incorporated a new not-for-profit Florida corporation named Elfun Society of Florida, Inc., headquartered in Daytona Beach. We then applied for and received approval from the IRS for recognition as a “Social and Recreational Club” under Section 501(c)(7) of the Internal Revenue Code. All dues-paying members of the former Florida Atlantic Coast Chapter of GE Elfun were transferred to the new entity, and, in addition, membership was opened to any current or former GE employees and/or surviving spouses who wished to participate. The new Elfun Society of Florida will continue to coordinate member programs such as luncheons and dinners, educational presentations, attendance at sporting or entertainment events, and similar recreational activities.

Upon the dissolution of the national GE Elfun organization, any remaining corporate funds were distributed to those entities which elected to continue on a local level. The bank account of the old Florida Atlantic Coast Chapter was also transferred to the new entity. In addition to nominal annual dues, these funds will continue to be used to supplement the cost of Elfun events, and to assist in defraying the expenses of certain volunteer activities under the banner of GE Volunteers.
